Following the commissioning of four high power FM transmitters, Radio 1 completely re-organised its evening schedules, extending broadcast hours to 2am and losing most of its time slots on Radio 2 FM. New Music programming was cut back and more programmes introduced for older listeners

Alan Freeman re-joined Radio 1 at the start of 1989, taking over the Saturday night rock show and Sunday afternoon oldies slot. In April, broadcast hours were extended with a 5 AM start and Mark Goodier and Bruno Brookes swapped.

From 1st May 1991, Radio 1 commenced 24 hour broadcasting on FM, the second BBC network to do so. Broadcasting hours on medium wave were limited to 06:00-00:00 until it closed in 1994.
