Public radio The Netherlands is unique in having ten different public broadcasting organisations of varying size, some of which are affiliated to religious or political groups. These broadcast across five national radio networks, divided by programme type and controlled by NOS. Public broadcasting is funded by a mixture of license fee, advertising and individual membership of the broadcasting organisations. The radio networks are divided on conventional lines, with Radio 1 broadcasting news and talk, Radio 2 popular music of various types, Radio 3 contemporary music, Radio 4 classical music and arts and 747 AM minority and religious programming. Radios 1 to 4 broadcast on FM. In addition, there is a network of 13 local and regional radio stations on FM, which provide universal coverage between them. Commercial radio Commercial radio in the Netherlands was re-organised in 2003. On FM, there are nine national networks, each covering half to two thirds of the land area, with coverage generally better in the North and West of the country. These are Arrow 90.7FM (jazz with classical), Business Nieuws Radio, Radio 538 (contemporary), ID&T (modern rock), Noordzee FM (adult), RTL Holland FM (Dutch-based music), Sky Radio (adult), Veronica 103 (oldies) and Yorin FM (contemporary). There are also about 20 local stations on FM, many of which have non-continuous coverage. Two national, three large-scale and seven local licenses have been awarded on AM. However, many of these stations are still not on air a year after the licenses were awarded. Currently Arrow Rock Radio (classic rock) and Radio 10 Gold (oldies) broadcast nationally. Community radio The FM band above 105 MHz in the Netherlands is devoted almost exclusively to a host of small community radio stations, many of which receive public funding. Radio en TV zenders in Nederland list all of the radio stations in the Netherlands. |
