A number of frequencies for BBC local radio were registered with the ITU in the mid 1980s when the FM band was last re-organised. Some of these may be used in the future, though they are all subject to change.

  • Radio Cornwall - St Just 104.3, Bodmin area 104.5
  • BBC Essex - Southend 104.7, Harwich 104.9
  • Radio nan Gaidheal - SE Grampian (Durris) 104.9, Dee Valley (Tullich) 95.0 (in practice, this would be R4 with RnG on 104.5)
  • BBC Hereford and Worcester - Leominster 104.2
  • Radio Kent - Canterbury 95.1, Ashford 104.9
  • Radio Oxford - Banbury 95.9
  • Radio Solent - Ventnor 104.7
  • Radio Solent for Dorset - Bournemouth 95.7, North Dorset 104.5
  • BBC Somerset - Yeovil 104.1, Taunton 104.7
  • Southern Counties Radio - Hastings 103.6, Haslemere 103.6
  • Three Counties Radio - Central Hertfordshire 89.9 (could be used in Stevenage if it doesn't interfere with R2 in Hitchin)
  • Radio Wiltshire - Pewsey Vale 94.8

Further frequencies that may be used to improve BBC local radio reception include.

  • Radio Leeds - Bradford 95.7 or 104.5
  • Radio Leicester - Rutland 95.3 or 104.0
  • Radio Norfolk - Thetford 94.7, North West 95.3, 104.0/1 or 104.7/8
  • Radio Solent for Dorset - West Dorset 104.9
  • BBC Somerset - Minehead 95.7

The following frequencies are likely to be kept clear in case the abandoned plans for new BBC local radio stations in Bradford, Cheshire, Dorset and Wolverhampton/ Black Country are revived in the future.

  • West Cheshire 90.2 (ITU registered)
  • East Cheshire 103.6/7
  • Cheshire filler 104.1 or 99.8
  • Wolverhampton and Black Country 92.0
  • Huddersfield and Halifax 95.7 or 104.5 (whichever is not used for Bradford)

There are many areas not on the above lists, where BBC local radio FM reception is poor

Radio Wales

Many of the frequencies for expanding FM coverage of Radio Wales were registered with the ITU in the mid 1980s when the FM band was last re-organised. These are all subject to change.

  • South East Wales - Vale of Neath (Rheola) 95.2, Pontypridd 95.2, Rhymney 105.3, Newbridge 95.4, Caerphilly 95.7, Llangeinor & Pontycymer 95.9, Abertillery 96.1, Bridgend 104.4
  • West Wales - Dolgellau 95.9, Machynlleth 96.1 , Newcastle Emlyn (Llandyfriog) 96.1
  • North Wales - Ffestiniog 94.7, Deiniolen & Llanberis 95.2, Conwy & Llandudno 95.3, Betws-y-coed 95.9
  • Powys - Llanidloes 94.7, Welshpool (Long Mountain) 94.9, Hay on Wye/ Clyro 95.1, Llanraedr-y-Mochnant 95.2, Brecon 95.5, Central Powys (Llandrindod Wells) 95.7, Llanfyllin 104.0, Newtown (Llandinam) 104.6

Frequencies must still be found for a number of areas. Lampeter and the Teifi Valley (Mynydd Pencarreg) can use 94.8. For covering the remainder of Clwyd and for Carmarthen, frequencies outside the BBC local sub-bands will be needed. Possibilities for Clwyd include 88.1 and 92.5. An alternative for Caramarthen is to move the Radio Cymru transmitter to 104.2, synchronised with Swansea (as is done for Real Radio), then 93.3 can be used for Radio 4 and 95.5 for Radio Wales.
